Everything changes. Sometimes you want the good feeling to last forever, but even the most beautiful sunset turns into darkness. The goal is to learn to embrace the duality in all things, although that is easier said then done in most situations. Over the last 8 years, I’ve had the privilege of building a great relationship with Tyrone Patnett, one the owners and founders of the iconic Soundbite Studios. He is a staple of the LA music scene and his studio has provided an affordable safe haven for so many musicians to be able to hone their craft. For the last 15 years he has worked a 40-60 hour work week in healthcare and then gone to the studio to help out. Recently he allowed us to build out our No Phones Allowed show and most of the time I didn’t even make enough to pay him or the band. Just last week I watched him sweep, clean, and move gear around at 2 am after working all day. I am grateful to him for his generosity and it is truly heartbreaking to see such a kind man have to navigate the economic struggles that so many businesses and individuals are experiencing at this time.
Running a business is like a relationship. The longer that you are in it, the harder it is to leave it behind, especially when it’s all you know. Most of the time we don’t move on from the things we love, life just changes and then something tragic happens to yank it from our hands while we are kicking and screaming like children. But this isn’t a regular business. We are all in a relationship with Soundbite Studios. She is like the Queen of Sheba and we are all her grateful and willing concubines just waiting for our next turn at glory. 1000s of musicians call this place home and I truly believe that together we can save this place. So if the spirit moves you please give what you can to a tremendous man who deserves a miracle. Together We Can (Obama voice).
